When a washer won’t drain, it usually happens right when you’re trying to get laundry done. It’s one of the most common repair calls we receive from homeowners in Georgetown, Taylor, Round Rock, and the surrounding Central Texas area.

The good news is that most drain issues are simple, affordable fixes. Below are the most common reasons a washer stops draining and what you can safely check before calling for service.

1. The Drain Pump Filter Is Clogged

This is the number one cause of a washer not draining. Many front-load washers have a small filter that catches coins, pet hair, lint, and other pocket debris. When it becomes clogged, water can’t flow out of the drum.

What You Can Check

  • Look for the small access door along the lower front of your washer.
  • Place a towel down—water will come out when you open the filter.
  • Remove and clean the filter, then reinstall it.

If the washer drains afterward, that was likely the issue.

2. The Drain Pump May Have Failed

If the filter is clear but the washer still won’t drain, the drain pump itself may be worn out or jammed internally. Hard water, small debris, and general wear can cause these pumps to fail over time.

Common Signs

  • Washer makes a loud humming or grinding noise during drain.
  • Standing water remains in the drum after a cycle.
  • Error codes appear on the display.

Replacing a pump is usually straightforward and far cheaper than buying a new washer.

3. The Drain Hose Is Kinked or Blocked

The drain hose can become bent, pressed against the wall, or blocked by lint. Even if the washer is working properly, a kinked hose can stop water from draining out.

What You Can Check

  • Pull the washer forward and inspect the hose for sharp bends.
  • Make sure the hose isn’t jammed too tightly into the standpipe.
  • If comfortable, disconnect the hose and flush it with water.

A simple adjustment can sometimes fix the problem immediately.

4. Faulty Lid Switch (Top-Load Washers)

Top-load washers won’t drain or spin if the lid switch isn’t working. The machine reads the lid as “open,” stopping the cycle for safety.

Symptoms

  • Washer fills but won’t move to the next cycle.
  • No click sound when the lid closes.
  • Intermittent spinning or draining.

Lid switches are inexpensive and quick to replace.

5. Belt Problems on Older Washers

Some older washers use a belt system to spin the drum. When a belt slips or breaks, the washer may still fill with water, but it won’t spin or drain.

Signs of a Belt Issue

  • Drum isn’t spinning.
  • A burning rubber smell.
  • Loud thumping or slapping noises.

Bonus: The Problem Might Be Your Home’s Drain Line

If the washer tries to drain and water backs up or overflows from the standpipe, the issue is likely a clogged plumbing drain—not the washer. In that case, a plumber will need to clear the line.

Is It Worth Repairing a Washer That Won’t Drain?

In most cases, yes. Drain-related issues are some of the most affordable washer repairs. Most fixes cost far less than replacing the machine, especially with today’s appliance prices.

How to Prevent Washer Drain Problems

  • Clean the pump filter every 3–6 months.
  • Avoid overloading the washer.
  • Use the correct amount of HE detergent.
  • Keep pet hair and small items out of pockets.
  • Check drain hoses periodically.
